WHAT WE DO

Empowering Local Communities

Growing Nepal is a collaboration of Australian and Nepali community service providers whose aim is to holistically benefit the needy and the disadvantaged in remote villages of Nepal with nutrition and health education, green solutions, equality and community building and solutions for financial empowerment. Plus we organise tours of our projects and treks in Nepal!

Health and Hygiene

Issues around basic sanitation and prevention of disease, women’s equality, health and sex education, and nutrition are being addressed by Growing Nepal’s partners. Community discussions identify areas of improvement and our regular training camps and educators make a significant difference.

Womens’ Business Initiatives

Our aim is foremost to help women find their own solutions to financially improving their lives. With small micro finance investments and mentoring, women can invest in agricultural, handicraft and food production businesses that take them from poverty to economic sustainability.

Sustainable Food

We create small scale projects that can make a significant difference in sustainable food supply through community farming projects. Food security, soil degradation, lack of labour force and outdated farming methods are improved with permaculture education and hands on skills training and sharing.

Green Energy Solutions

Off grid energy supply and production is essential in Nepal in remote and often harsh locations. Energy efficient smokeless cookstoves make life healthier and more time efficient for rural people whose lives revolve around 365 days a year in living off the land. Theses cookstoves reduce smoke inhalation and forest timber degradation by 3/4.

Building an Eco Community Centre

In collaboration with local needs, we aim to build off grid community centres which serve to facilitate energy projects, workshops and work spaces, education and health camps and generally a focus point for our work. These community centres also include community toilets, showers and laundry in their first stages. Second stages are workrooms, meeting rooms, community kitchens and gardens, and third stage is accommodation for the needy, storage, and visiting educators, trainers and volunteers.

ProjectS

Terai Community Development from 2016
In collaboration with local needs and together with local, national and international organisations, we aim to develop community projects which incorporate green energy solutions, community co-ops, skills development and income generation, health, sanitation and hygiene education and organic sustainable farming practices. Our goal is to build effective and replicatable community models of village development to alleviate poverty and generate self sufficiency and sustainable standards of living. Our projects from 2016 will be in the Madesh part of southern Nepal on the Terai, in ultra poor dalit villages and supporting others that do also.
Our COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT will:

✔  Provide training that teaches locals to use and learn more efficient energy production in terms of energy-efficient smokeless cookstoves, to improve health and reduce environmental wood load. This will be a train the trainer model to spread to other households in project areas.

✔  Provide a community work hub project for women especially to start and engage in their own co-ops and small business initiatives (micro financed) that provides support, training, mentoring, networks and sustainable production. Training in soap making, smokeless cookstoves and washable menstrual kits starts our process in women’s empowerment.

✔  We have also supplied a Janakpur orphanage with a water filtration system to make life easier for thrown or abandoned babies and children and those that support them. We dig deeper wells to improve water supply with safety guards where necessary in dalit villages.

✔  Provide education on sexual health and menstruation management and better nutrition as well as education on women’s rights, gender equality, anti-discrimination and advocacy.

✔  Provide training in co-operative finance structures that help women get started in their own income education and generation.

✔ Provide training in permaculture for a community and school farm for the growing of organic crops and various types of fruit and vegetables to alleviate malnutrition.
